Thyroid Problems and yoga poses to help
Do you suffer from hyper or hypo thyroidsim?
Hyperthyroidism is where your thyroid gland is over active.
Let me jump back a step and tell you a little about the function of the thyroid gland.
The thyroid gland secretes hormones to regulate many metabolic processes, including things like you sleep patterns, eating patterns, sex drive, and all of those metabolic systems in your body.
So if you have hyperthyroidism your thyroid gland is overactive and we DO NOT want to stimulate it more, rather we need to slow it down. DO NOT DO THE POSE IN THIS VIDEO because it activates the thyroid gland.
If you suffer from hypothyroidism, the pose demonstrated in this video will do you wonders. It stimulates the thyroid gland and assists in regulating the metabolic processes in the body.
The pose I am demonstrating is Supported Shoulder Stands. YOu can do this at home with a couch. If you do not suffer from thyroid problems this is also a great pose to do at the end of the working day.
Inversions are not so popular because often we have to practice them a lot before they are comfortable.
Furthermore, I often see people practice them without support under the shoulder which makes it very strong for the neck and not very comfortable and as a result not very compelling to practice.
I see students new to yoga do shoulder stands with a chair quite easily and the same applies to a couch. You can try this at home just watch the video from start to finish before you do.
Make sure you do put blankets or towels under the shoulder otherwise, it is very strong on the neck. The more support under the shoulders the more comfortable it will be.
If you have neck problems, do not try this at home. If you like this pose then come and try an Iyengar yoga class, we often do this posture in class.
